[Dried Out] Pond at Ars Electronica 2025

As part of the Ars Electronica Campus Exhibition, the Media Art & Design programme of the Faculty of Art and Design is showcasing five artistic projects under the title of »Cybernetic Subjects«: The Pond, Ymr.x, Latent Heat Generation, She’s So Centsible, Sonic Ecologies, and Humans. The exhibition revisits cybernetics – the science of control, regulation and communication in systems – and critically examines the links to artificial intelligence (AI) and ecological practices. While cybernetic systems are modelled on nature, today’s technologies seldom aim to truly understand nature and the environment. This is precisely what the central project »The Pond« addresses.

Mycorrhizal Networks or How I Hack Plant Conversations @ Roots x Wires

Roots x Wires at Atletika 2024.06.27–08.08

Due to our limited sensory perception, we were never able to connect with plants. We can’t perceive their movements and behaviors, which happen on a different timescale, nor can we detect their chemical and electrical signaling. But technology can. That is why we rely on technological devices, operating as our sensory prostheses, to mediate between the human and plant, and reveal their true nature.

Interfaces for Boris and Mindaugas @ The Ágape, an immersive collective experience that serves as the culmination and celebration of a six-chapter workshop series called Sensoriality: Art & Neuroscience Through Our Senses.

In 2023, the vision of Sensoriality was to investigate how our senses play a vital role in shaping our understanding of reality as we navigate the world. In each session, experts in the field of art and neuroscience explored six classic perceptive systems: visual, olfactory, gustatory, somatosensory, auditory and proprioception. As the finissage to this immersive workshop series, during The Ágape multiple artists and musicians will exhibit artworks and performances related to neuroscience and the exploration of the senses. In addition, the event features a neuroscientific panel talk and embodied practices for attendees, creating an engaging and thought-provoking experience for all involved.

Doctoral thesis: Aesthetics of Maker Culture

In this work, practice-based research is conducted to rethink the understanding of aesthetics, especially in relation to current media art. Granted, we live in times when technologies merge with living organisms, but we also live in times that provide unlimited resources of knowledge and maker tools. I raise the question: In what way does the hybridization of living organisms and non-living technologies affect art audiences in the culture that may be defined as Maker culture? My hypothesis is that active participation of an audience in an artwork is inevitable for experiencing the artwork itself, while also suggesting that the impact of the umwelt changes the perception of an artwork. I emphasize artistic projects that unfold through mutual interaction among diverse peers, including humans, non-human organisms, and machines.
