Workshop with Mindaugas Gapševičius, Auksė Gaižauskaitė, Miglė Kalvaitytė, and participants
2019 06 15-17 @ MO, Pylimo g. 17, Vilnius 01141, Lithuania

Have you ever thought about a genome encoded in DNA? What invisible features are hidden in your body? What diseases might you potentially have? The theme introduced during the experiments is conceptually wrapped and speculated about in the toolkit “How I prepare myself to be cloned.”

The experiments will invite participants to self-detect mutated sequences of the human genome. Participants will execute three experiments: an extraction and amplification of a DNA sample, gel electrophoresis, and DNA fingerprinting. The question being raised is how far analysis of one’s own DNA at home might be beneficial. What do molecules tell about potential diseases?
The outcome of the experiments — individual DNA fingerprints, which will be presented at the end of the workshop.

Auksė Gaižauskaitė is an alumna of Vilnius University who specialises in Genetics and Molecular Biology. She was a member of “Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM” team, which won the Grand Prize in the largest, most prestigious, international Synthetic Biology Competition iGEM in 2017. She is active participant in science promotion activities and always was interested in creative learning and new possibilities in the merger of art and science fields.

Miglė Kalvaitytė is an alumna of Vilnius University who specialises in Molecular Biology. During her studies she was a member of Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team where she got a chance to explore the interaction of arts and science. Miglė is passionate about sharing her knowledge as well as trying to engage people in biotechnology, synthetic biology and life sciences.
